Former Red Jamie Redknapp believes that Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk could be the greatest defender to ever grace the Premier League.

Van Dijk, who signed for Liverpool from Southampton for a transfer fee of £75 million in January 2018, has been sensational for the Anfield club.

Van Dijk’s presence has helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Van Dijk will also more than likely be able to add the Premier League title to the aforementioned list of achievements when the coronavirus clears, as the Reds are 25 points clear at the top of the table.

Liverpool have only conceded 21 goals from 29 Premier League fixtures this season, which is why the Reds are in such a strong position to claim the title.

As a result of what the centre-back has achieved at Liverpool, Redknapp believes that Van Dijk is “probably” the best defender to grace the Premier League.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “He’s just unbelievable. Probably the best Premier League defender ever. I put Adams, Terrys, Ferdinand, Vidic – but he’s the best I’ve seen.”

Van Dijk has to be Liverpool’s greatest signing in the Premier League era. Many will say Luis Suarez is that signing, but the reality is, Van Dijk has led Liverpool to trophies.

The Anfield faithful have not seen a centre-back like Van Dijk for a very long time.

For years the club have been crying out for a defender that can play to an extremely high level, but also a defender that has the ability to give confidence to others. Van Dijk fits that description to a tee.
