Former Red Jamie Carragher is surprised that Liverpool did not make a move for playmaker Hakim Ziyech.

Ziyech, who has just signed for Chelsea from Ajax for a transfer fee of £33.3 million, has been a player that has impressed many as of late.

The playmaker has been sensational for Ajax in recent times, which got the attention of Carragher. He did have a feeling that Liverpool would make a move for Ziyech, however, Chelsea beat them to it.

“The Ajax lad was outstanding last season in that Champions League run,” said Carragher, as quoted by HITC.

“He was a player I thought actually Liverpool may look at as well; he can play both sides, maybe as cover for Mane or Salah. But it looks like Chelsea have gone into the market and they’re going to do get something done already.”

There is no denying Ziyech is a player of immense quality. The price he went for was very cheap, especially in today’s market.

Liverpool do lack a player that is purely a playmaker, as they never replaced Philippe Coutinho. However, it certainly has not impacted them in a negative way.

The Reds are 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Jurgen Klopp’s side have also lifted the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup within the past seven months.

Sure, Ziyech would have been a handy addition, but he certainly was not a necessity, as Liverpool are currently flying.
