Jamie Carragher disagrees with Rio Ferdinand’s suggestion that Virgil van Dijk is “the best centre-half around on current form.”

The Dutchman was imperious again last night against Bayern Munich, keeping Robert Lewandowski are bay while also bagging a goal for himself in the 3-1 win.

But Carragher, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, believes Van Dijk must win silverware before he can be considered the best.

“I think he’s a world-class centre-back, there’s no doubt about that,” Carragher said.

“There is talk ‘Is he the best centre-back in the world right now?’.

“At this moment, maybe with Real Madrid and you think of maybe [Sergio] Ramos, maybe [Gerard] Pique in the last few years, maybe they’re not at the same level now, maybe Van Dik is that player.

“He is yet to win the big trophies like the best players in the world do.

“You even think of [Raphael] Varane, who won the World Cup in the summer also.

“So of course, he needs those trophies to say ‘I am the best in the world’.

“But in terms of a centre-back, would me as a Liverpool supporter want any other centre-back in the world playing for Liverpool instead of Van Dijk right now? No.”
