Liverpool midfielder James Milner has backed Joe Gomez to bounce back stronger as he begins his road to recovery from surgery on his knee.

The defender had to pull out of international duty and go under the knife with a knee complaint back in the international break, with him now set for a considerable spell on the sidelines.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen this with the former Charlton defender during his time at the club, though, and the hope will be he returns quickly and embarks then on a good run of games without issue.

Quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Milner is tipping the centre-half to do just that:

“We’ve spoken about Virg a lot, Joe is exactly the same – devastated for him.

“An amazing guy, first and foremost and most importantly, and you don’t want to see it happen to anyone but (especially not) someone like him.

“As a player, how good he is as well. People forget how young he is and what he’s done at this club already and how much he has improved and continues to improve.

“He’s still really young. He’s been through this once before with a bad injury and came through it stronger, so if anybody has got the mental fortitude to deal with this, it’s him.

“He has been through it before and he came back stronger, and I’m sure that will be the case again.”

Gomez is made of tough stuff mentally and we have seen that before with how he has returned to the Liverpool side and excelled after lengthy injury spells out.

This latest knock he is bound to come back from and you just have to hope it’ll be the last serious injury he gets for a while as he is still a young player and doesn’t need a bad fitness record already.

Milner is expecting him to bounce straight back, and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t.
