Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool at the beginning of the 2015-16 season.
Liverpool were 10th in the Premier League on the day that Rodgers was sacked, which does highlight how poor the results were under the Northern Irishman.
Immediately after Rodgers was sacked, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry stated that Liverpool was no longer a “big team”.
Henry told Sky Sports in 2015 (00:25): “It’s [Liverpool] not a big team anymore.”
Liverpool hired Jurgen Klopp to replace Rodgers.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Henry’s comment at the time was very accurate. When Rodgers was sacked in 2015, Liverpool had not won a major honour since claiming the Champions League in 2005.
The big teams win the major honours in football. When 2015 came around, it had been a decade since Liverpool had won anything of significance.
However, Liverpool are now a big team again. Under Klopp, Liverpool have claimed the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the Premier League title.
The aforementioned achievements highlight that Liverpool are a big team again. Hopefully Klopp’s side can continue winning trophies, as it would be nice to see the Reds make up for lost time.
