Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum could leave the club come the end of the season, according to David Ornstein from The Athletic.
The Dutchman, who arrived at Anfield from Newcastle for a fee of £25 million back in the summer of 2016, is contracted to Liverpool for another 18 months.
During Wijnaldum’s time at the club, he has arguably become one of Jurgen Klopp’s most important players. When he arrived from Newcastle, he had been someone who played in the No.10 position.
Under Klopp, however, he has become a central midfielder, which highlights his flexibility as a footballer.
Wijnaldum’s development as a footballer has seen him become a regular in Klopp’s XI, but despite all of this, Ornstein has stated that the Dutchman could leave Liverpool come the end of the season, as he has had interest from clubs across Spain and Italy.
Ornstein added that Liverpool would like to keep Wijnaldum beyond the end of the season and would risk losing him on a free in the summer of 2021.
However, if a suitable offer came to the table, Liverpool would be open to selling Wijnaldum come the end of this campaign to receive a transfer fee.
This is quite a bizarre report as no one could see this coming. Wijnaldum has been huge for Liverpool since arriving at the club back in 2016.
He has given Klopp’s team so much, which does make it strange that this sort of story is doing the rounds.
Given how strong Liverpool currently are and the fact Wijnaldum is a regular in Klopp’s side, it does appear unlikely that Wijnaldum will be looking for a move away.
He has claimed the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at the club.
The Premier League is a trophy the Dutchman could win, also. The Reds possess a 13-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.
It is unlikely that Wijnaldum will be moving anytime soon, but it is an interesting report nonetheless.
