Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk only just lost to Barcelona forward Lionel Messi when it came to the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

According to the Daily MailVan Dijk, who finished second, was only seven points behind Messi. The Argentine went on to win the prestigious award for a record six times.

Messi finished with 686 votes, while Van Dijk finished with 679. Regardless of the fact the Dutchman finished second, the man deserves as much praise as Messi.

To be a defender and run the best footballer the world has ever seen that close is an achievement itself.
