Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane would be a “fantastic” signing for Liverpool this summer.
The former Reds winger says he has all the qualities to be successful in Liverpool’s team and that he would strengthen any team in the Premier League with his arrival.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are reportedly the main team interested in Varane this summer as he continues to tussle with Real Madrid over his future. His contract at Real expires at the end of next season and is yet to make a decision on his next move, with the Spanish giants valuing him at €100m.
Speaking to BonusCodeBets, as transcribed by The Express, Barnes reacted to Liverpool being linked to the Frenchman. “Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play. For Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business.
“He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Ignoring his price tag for a minute, Barnes’ comments are warranted by Varane’s statistics for Real Madrid. Varane has won four Champions League trophies, three La Liga titles and a World Cup in his career to date throughout his time with Real Madrid and the French national team. This shows the standard of player Liverpool are being linked with and why Barnes holds him in such high regard.
Varane has also averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.95 over the course of his career for club and country. This shows that he has been consistently brilliant for one of the biggest clubs in the world for the best part of a decade, after joining Real Madrid in 2011. He is also 27 and has plenty of years still left at the top level, potentially making him a very attractive option to clubs if he becomes available.
However, the price tag is an issue for Varane. Real Madrid are looking for a fee in the region of €100m for Varane and, as we explained in a previous article on Varane, Liverpool have reportedly been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic on the financial side. This means that, whilst Barnes’ comments are seemingly justified, it might not be a realistic transfer for Liverpool.
