Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov believes that Liverpool should get the opportunity to claim the 2019-20 Premier League title.
The Premier League was suspended on March 13 due to the coronavirus. Originally, the Premier League were looking to resume matches at the beginning of May, however, that is no longer the case.
The Premier League announced last Friday that the fixtures will remain suspended indefinitely.
This does impact Liverpool for the time being, as the club are currently 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Two more victories would ensure the Reds the title.
However, not all hope is lost, as the Premier League have stated that they do intend to complete the season, but only when it is safe to do so.
Many people on social media have called for the season to be cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding the world at the moment due to the coronavirus, but Berbatov believes that it would be “unfair” if the season were to be cancelled, as the Reds possess such a huge lead at the top of the table.
“People are suggesting to give the title to Liverpool, and honestly they deserve it the way they had been playing, nobody was going to catch them,” Berbatov told Betfair, as quoted by Metro.
“With the way they play their games, the football they produced and how far they are in front, they fully deserve the title this season.
“It’s so strange, and it will be unfair on Liverpool if the season is voided, they will be so disappointed.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
It would be heartbreaking if the season were to be completely cancelled.
The Premier League may have stated that there is an intention to complete the season when it is safe to do so, but with there being so much uncertainty surrounding the world at the moment due to the coronavirus, who knows what might happen.
It is difficult to comprehend starting the 2020-21 season without finishing the 2019-20 campaign. The Reds have not won a domestic league title for 30 years, which makes this situation all the more difficult to accept.
If the season were to never be completed, it would be difficult to take given the 25-point lead that the Reds currently possess. But, at this current moment, there is nothing to suggest that the season will not be completed.
