Former Red Danny Murphy believes that Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka would fit in well at Liverpool.
Xhaka is a much-maligned figure at Arsenal. The Gunners signed Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee of around £30–35 million back in 2016, but he has failed to impress the Arsenal faithful thus far. If many Arsenal fans had their way, he would arguably be sold tomorrow.
Despite Xhaka being one-paced in the eyes of Murphy, he believes the Swiss international would fit in well at Liverpool due to the quality of players he would be surrounded by.
Murphy said on TalkSport: “If you play midfield you can’t keep making the same mistakes and expect not to be criticised.
“I can’t doubt his passion, his work ethic, but when you run around headless and don’t think about what you’re doing you’re going to keep getting booked and you’re going to keep being a liability for your team. He doesn’t learn, he let’s the passion get the better of him.
“For Arsenal to move forward and be a team that Arteta wants to compete, I don’t think you can carry midfielders like that.
“Xhaka is one-paced. If he was in Liverpool’s side with [Jordan] Henderson and Fabinho, he would look a hell of a player because he’s technically good, a good passer, he can open you up, he’s got ability with a great left foot.
“But when you’re in a team that’s struggling a little bit he’s a passenger defensively and a liability. It’s a dilemma for Arteta.”
Despite Murphy only speaking hypothetically, this is not a transfer we can see occurring. Liverpool are so strong in midfield, and it is the one area on the pitch they possess the most depth in. He would very much be a squad player at best.
Xhaka certainly has ability, but Liverpool now bring in players from a completely different market. That is a luxury of being the best team in the world.
